Indexing Concepts and Feelings
Ability, Evil, Fidelity or Power
The process of indexing images, particularly photographs, is made extremely complex by the variety of uses for which they can be used, says the Principal of The Caldeson Consultancy, Michael Steemson. Literally, to one man a tower block can mean progress, while to another it can be excess or an environmental pollutant.
To assist on-line searches of picture archives, indexers can add key words of concepts and feelings to help users find the image that illustrates these ideas, even when the clients themselves may have no really clear idea of what would fit.
Over-page may be found synonym and key word lists for Facial Expressions and Actions. The following list of almost 80 key Concepts and Feelings gives pictorial synonyms, images that will look the same, though the words to describe them may not be synonymous. Key words and synonyms total more than 500.
